Gujarat Relief Fund Update: In the last newsletter, we informed our readers that AIA (NEC) had collected more than $90,000. In addition, the New York Chapter collected about $11,500 and Florida Chapter raised about $21,500.

CHAPTER NEWS
Three New Chapters: Ohio, Tennessee, & the Capital District (New York)
During the last four months two new Chapters were established: one in Ohio and the other in Tennessee. The founding Presidents for these Chapters are Dr. K.V. Rao of Bowling Green and Dr. Kiran Desai of Nashville. The third. The Capital District Chapter, is in progress.

Metropolitan Washington, DC
Metropolitan DC Chapter held a very successful Annual Health Fair on May 20, 2001. Their Academic Awards Program took place on July 8th at the Jack Masur Auditorium at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

New Jersey Chapter
The AIA New Jersey chapter held its Annual Health Fair on September 30, 2001 from 2-6pm in Edison, NJ. Area medical doctors donated their time and equipment. Multiple specialties were represented. About 250-300 people attended.

New York Chapter
The famous Deepavali Festival was scheduled to be held at the South Street Seaport on Sunday October 7, 2001. This all day event attracts about 130,000 - 150,000 people. (Details in the next newsletter.)

Illinois Chapter
Illinois Chapter under the leadership of Mr. Nand Kapoor, Chapter President and Dr. Ghanshyam Pandey, Chairman of the Chapter Board of Trustees held a banquet to celebrate the Asian Heritage Month on May 19, 2001. The event was attended by more than 300 people including several prominent public officials. Congressman Danny Davis was the keynote speaker who inspired the audience to overcome obstacles to attain justice, equality and opportunities in this vast nation. Commissioner Mike Patel, who was the honoree, addressed the issues related to healthcare. Chief Guest Indian Consul General Mr. Surendra Kumar congratulated the AIA on its achievements and community service. Consul General of South Africa Dr. K. Rajoo and former Consul General of India Mr. PL. Santoshi were also in attendance. Chapter President Nand Kapoor set the tone for the evening with remarks of goodwill and inclusion. Dr. Pandey described the Goals and Objectives of AIA and emphasized that the vision of AIA, the oldest Indian organization, has served its Community in this country extremely well.

Recognition for Community Service:
The City of New York issued two separate Proclamations on August 22, 2001 honoring The Association of Indians in America and the NY Chapter President Mr. Hari Khera. In a colorful ceremony, achievements of AIA and its contribution to the community were highlighted. Congratulations and thanks to Mr. Khera and all the Past Presidents for bringing this recognition to AIA.
